LANZAROTE HOLIDAYS AND VACATIONS
There are plenty of vacation options for anyone planning a holiday in Lanzarote this year. As the third most popular of the Canary Islands is an ideal spot for anyone seeking to escape the worst excesses of mass market tourism. Despite the fact that the island welcomes well over 1.3 million visitors a year.
Lanzarote and the Canaries are part of the EU and Spain – but are located much closer to Africa. Which is why these seven islands enjoys such good weather all year round, boasting a semi tropical climate that acts as a magnet for sun starved Northern Europeans. Despite this the islands are only a four hour flight from the UK – their largest market – making them the closest winter sun destination to Britain. As well as a popular summer holiday option.
Indeed British tourists have been touring these islands ever since the days of intrepid Victorian travellers. And last year Lanzarote alone welcomed something in the region of 700,000 arrivals from the UK. With flights to Lanzarote from Britain taking around four hours.
All flights arrive at the sole island airport of Arrecife, which is located close to the capital city of the same name. Visitors should note that there is no shuttle service linking the airport to the main resorts. So arrivals either have to queue for a taxi or book a vehicle at one of the Lanzarote Car Hire offices that are located in the main arrivals hall.
Tourism on Lanzarote is concentrated in three well contained resorts; Costa Teguise, Puerto del Carmen and Playa Blanca. All of which boast their own individual charms. Costa Teguise is located to the north of the island and is an ideal spot if you are planning to explore the islands many cultural attractions. As most of these are within a twenty minute drive.
Costa Teguise is also home to one of the best hotels in Lanzarote – in the form of the five star Gran Melia Salinas. Which was designed and developed during the 1970´s with the help of the famous local artist César Manrique. Puerto del Carmen is located just a short drive from the airport and is the oldest resort on the island. Having started life as a little fishing village called La Tiñosa. Whilst Playa Blanca is located right at the southern toe of Lanzarote and is home to great beaches and an abundance of good value four star hotels.
